i heart her

violet vidz

Violet's been reading a lot of books... to Zooey. And if you want a glimpse into a toddler's mind, there is a great moment near the end where you can see she is deciding whether or not to misbehave, knowing that I am looking right at her.

Before we left for the pool, she was very insistent that she complete a few phone calls. I had no choice but to wait patiently.

Conversations with a very silly little girl.

Also, happy birthday to my Dad (aka "Poppy" to Violet)! Hope you had a great day!

another visit to the garden

The zinnias are finally blooming. It sure is satisfying to see something grow that you started as a seed. And don't they have such pretty buds?

Found some little mushrooms taking up residence in my lavender box.

Here comes the barrage of morning glories.

New aster plant getting settled in.

The hydrangea tree is in bloom as well. The bright white petals slowly fade to dark pink over several weeks.

Um, I forget the exact name of this plant. I got it last year at the farmer's market as a scraggly plant, and I actually thought it had died. So I was surprised to see it pop up this year. Perennials are great like that.

The roses are starting to burst. I love it.

Annnnd here we go. Four loaves of zucchini bread down, and who knows how many more to go?

jolly p

AHHH this little girl is so sweet I can't take it. These days, she loves spelling her name for most anyone who will listen. (Except if you actually directly ask her to, in which case she will of course refuse.) Anyway, this is from a weekend or two ago when we ate on the rooftop deck at Jolly Pumpkin. I love that place so much... or should I say loveD? I found out that they removed my favorite menu item- the only one I ever ordered! Tragedy! But being with my lovely family softened the blow.

Also, apparently there was a car show on Main and a couple surrounding blocks. It was a nice evening for a stroll, so we joined the mostly age 50+ crowd.

THAT LADY WAS THERE. You know, the fun ruiner from the parade?? (as seen here)

We moved on to other areas and continued our stroll.

It was a fun evening with my fun fam.

just... no.

Haha, I could not believe this was actually being presented as an acceptable cereal option. It's a candy bar in a box!

hot art

I convinced myself to not let the mid 90's temps + serious humidity (aka, heat index of around 105) stand in the way of "enjoying" the annual Ann Arbor Art Fair! I really do love going every year, and so I wanted to make it work. Violet and I took the bus downtown so we wouldn't have to deal with parking, or waste any of our "I don't feel like I want to die from the heat yet" time walking from a far away parking spot. She loved the nice air-conditioned ride, and we got dropped off right smack in the middle of the fair. Okay, please take note of her face.

...and now look at her face again. This epitomizes what it felt like to be outside. Poor girlie was red-faced and dripping sweat after about 10 minutes. I tried to get a smile, but she defiantly looked away from me. I don't blame her one bit for her miserable, pouty expression.

I know it doesn't look like it, but there really weren't the usual crowds (it was Wednesday afternoon, which I'm sure is a slower time). It was just nice though because we could walk at a normal speed, instead of the slogging cattle herd pace you'll experience on, say, a Saturday.

Haha, Violet did perk up when she saw this. She really liked this lady!

Anyway, before you think I was heartlessly burning my child, let me say we made lengthy stops in air conditioned spaces. My parents were there that afternoon as well, so we all grabbed some lunch together. Sweaty Violet dried off and filled up on some good pizza from Silvio's.

Then we walked just a short bit until we reached the famous Urban Outfitters street sale. This is a shot into the actual store, but the non-pictured outdoor thing is pure madness. It seems like every year the street tent gets smaller, so navigating it with a bulky stroller caused many a trendy young 20-something chick to huff and be forced to actually step aside to make room for another person. It was pretty bold of me to venture in with Violet in tow- I have to pat myself on the back for that one. I try my best to limit the amount of "unfortunately I can't do that anymore because I'm a mom" things in my life.

We stopped inside as well. Violet always loves the jewelry and accessories section in these kind of stores. I don't think I ever mentioned the recent time I realize she had shoplifted from H&M and we had to go back and apologize... Anyway, overall it was quite the outing with some ups and some downs. I'm glad we got to experience some of it, and I am basically in heaven this week because this weather is amazing! I can actually have the windows open and feel comfortable ALL DAY. Gotta love summer.

backyard funz

This year, Mike and Violet and I brought back our famous Fourth of July grilling & fireworking party! It was a kind of hot day, but it was tolerable for hanging out on the lovely grass. I laid out the blankets and Violet tested them for quality.

Then we were joined by some fabulous friends.

Annnd some fabulous food.

We played this game that's sort of a drawing version of "Telephone" (the game, not the song by Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, in case you were confused why such an event would exist). The difference from the beginning statement to the end one with some great drawings is good for some plentiful lolz

Then it was time for our annual backyard fireworks! We don't go crazy... We'll just get like a $15 pack of assorted fireworks from Meijer and then buy an additional big (relatively speaking) one. They all delivered good times though!

Note the nearby watering can. You know, in case we had to gently sprinkle out a fire.

Looking forward to hopefully doing it again next year!

This is very cute- Violet reacts to her first fireworks experience! (+ bonus footage of our fun later on)

my name is karen

and here you will find things that i make and see.
