heaven help us

eyes & ears & limbs

I have an intense crush on the Black Keys. Not like on the people in the band, but totally on the music. OMG the album Brothers... I'm so into it right now it's sick.

Swoon. SWOON.

Just when you thought I couldn't get any more teenagery, I had to go out and start reading a new book series (Vampires! Werewolves! Forbidden teenage love! Fairies spelled like Faeries!). It's referred to as The Mortal Instruments series, and four of the six planned books by Cassandra Clare are currently released.

Mike and I are letting mean ol' Jillian Michaels boss us around lately. She promises to shred our bodies... I think in a good way, although sometimes I feel like the people featured on the right side of the picture above.

I've also been enjoying watching and listening to this sweet baby. She looks at me and says "Mama" and my heart melts into a puddle of melted heart.

Playin with Daddyyyyy...

...and holding the groceries while they shop together. I mean SOMEONE'S gotta protect the produce.

in the projects

When it was time to make some homemade birthday presents for my dad and brother, how could I not be inspired by this sweet face?

Project #1: glue gun, magnets, foam board, printed out images cardstock...

... to make mini-Polaroid magnets!

Here are a few of 'em.

Project #2: Some photography, a bit o' photoshoppery, and some painting...

... to make a painted silhouette of lil Violet for Poppy!

Nothing like the gift of cuteness.

scrunchie

Violet's new favorite face, named for the way she scrunches up her cute little nose.

2 haikus 4 you

Her tentative feet
Stagger and stumble but still
whisper fearlessness

Adventurously
My little bird attempts flight
Skinned knees are coming

by the yard

The not so itsy bitsy spider has taken up residence on my porch.

Also making an appearance... the first morning glory!

The gerber daisies somehow got Lazurus-ed and are now enjoying life to the full.

Ummmm I can't stop taking pictures of grilling food. You don't even know.

I know how you feel, cicada. I think after the trying year I've experienced thus far, I too need to shed my skin and emerge anew, reborn.*

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN MY OFFICE

eyes & ears

It took me three tries over a few years to get into The Yiddish Policeman's Union, but I'm glad it finally took. This is from the same author that brought you the Pulitzer prize-winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

A documentary about street artists, the enigmatic Banksy, and the ironic rise of the not-quite-artist yet overly successful "Mister Brainwash". AWESOME DOC. Watch it.

“The people who truly deface our neighborhoods are the companies that scrawl giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff. They expect to be able to shout their message in your face from every available surface but you’re never allowed to answer back. The wall is the weapon of choice.” -Banksy, street artist

Hauntingly good.

Hauntingly good, the sequel.

double date + 1

Violet invited some friends over for some grilling n games n good times.

After dinner McLaine made us some delishhh smoothies.

Then we got ready for playing Cloud Nine by making the patented "Mike face" ©

Betcha can't guess who won.

be here now

I read this story in Real Simple magazine about a woman who knew she would only be able to have one child, a daughter. She would repeat to herself, "Be here now"- to remember to soak in and savor every moment she had with her daughter as she grew from newborn to infant to toddler to child to young adult.

That phrase really resonated with me. I have no idea if any more kids are in the future for Mike and I (although we hope so), but I do know that Violet will be the only Violet I ever have. So I have been trying to cherish every moment of her precious life, rather than wish for the next stage to come quickly when it's tough. Because before I know it she will be all grown up (or at least too old to allow me to kiss her sweet lil puffy cheeks all day).

Just born and content in mommy's embrace.

And along the way I just love getting to know her better... my little music-lover. :)

epilogue

After the Maker Faire, we swung over to Detroit for a little street fair(e). Phew... I managed to take the 1000 photos from that one afternoon and put them into just three blog posts. A-thank you, a-thank you. Annnnnnnd SCENE.

ruffled

Oh my. Everything about these photos is just perfect... Violet just looks so lovely and sweet in the late afternoon summer sunlight. I love how the light glows on her little wispy golden hair. So very adorable :)

Joy.

faire-y tale

The end.

silly girl

Sometimes this little girl gets an acute case of the sillies.

This state is characterized by a lot of bouncing and/or licking. You know, the usual stuff people do.

Case in point.

And then sometimes Mom is the silly one... oops. Sidenote: It is craaazy how this is just from a couple weeks ago and already she is crawling like three times as fast. HOW CAN I GET THIS BABY TO STOP GROWING AND CHANGING?

By the way, thanks for the new playpen, Grandpa & Grandma! Or as I like to call it, "BABY JAIL". Let's just say everyone here is loving it. (Mostly me & Zooey)

my name is karen

and here you will find things that i make and see.
